How To Care for Your Inflatable SUP Board?
Practical Tips and Proven Maintenance Methods for Your SUP Board
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is becoming an increasingly popular activity, embraced by water sports enthusiasts in Poland and beyond. Many choose to invest in their own SUP board, selecting a model that fits their individual needs. While those renting equipment don’t have to worry about maintenance, SUP owners should know how to properly store and care for their board. Here’s how you can do it.
If you’ve become the proud owner of an SUP board and want it to last for many seasons, proper care is essential. After each use, it’s important to clean and dry your board. As autumn approaches and water activities wind down, it’s time to secure your SUP and find a suitable storage spot for the winter. Remember, the way you care for your equipment will impact its durability, quality, and functionality. To ensure your board retains its features and continues to provide joy, adhere to these maintenance and storage guidelines.
How To Clean Your SUP Board?
After every session, clean your SUP board of any dirt or debris (like sand, mud, or dried sea salt). It’s crucial to do this correctly. You’ll need a sponge (preferably one used for car washing), a soft-bristled brush, or a gentle cloth or towel. Avoid using strong detergents; mild soap is the best choice. If possible, dissolve the soap in a bowl of water, then use the solution to wash your SUP. Make sure you clean both sides of the board.
Pay special attention to the most sensitive areas—salt tends to accumulate around D-rings and the fin box. Don’t forget to thoroughly clean and dry these spots.
After washing, rinse off all soap and any remaining dirt. Finally, dry the board thoroughly. First, wipe off excess water with a cloth, then let it air dry. Manufacturers advise against exposing SUP boards to direct sunlight. When choosing a drying spot, opt for shaded areas. Why is this important? Sun exposure can weaken glued areas, leading to leaks. Additionally, the glue may yellow, negatively affecting the SUP’s appearance.
How To Store Your SUP Board
Proper storage of your SUP board is crucial. An inflatable SUP can be rolled up and stored in a backpack, but if you have enough space, you can also stand it up—either horizontally or vertically. The best solution is to use special racks or hangers mounted on the wall or ceiling, which helps prevent the board from warping. Choose a dry room with a stable room temperature for storage, ensuring the SUP is not exposed to sunlight. Remember, never hang the board by its handles or grips, as this can cause damage.
If you don’t plan to roll up the board, release some air to lower the pressure to about 6-10 psi. This will relieve the seams and help maintain the board’s condition. After the SUP season, you can roll up the board and store it in a spacious backpack. Ensure both the board and backpack are clean and dry. Avoid rolling the SUP too tightly to prevent dangerous creases in the material. If possible, occasionally take the board out, inflate it, and check for any issues. Always keep the backpack away from heat sources.

Regular Inspections Are Essential
Maintaining your board goes beyond cleaning and proper storage; regular inspections are also necessary. What should you focus on?
-
Check the valve for leaks.
-
Inspect the seams and their adhesion.
-
Examine the material for cracks, cuts, leaks, and any other damage.
-
Check the fin.
-
Look at the safety leash.
-
Inspect the paddle (check SUP board accessories).
It’s wise to scan the board before each use. Conducting a thorough inspection at the end of the season and before the next one starts is good practice. Remember, a well-maintained board not only enhances your paddling experience but also ensures user safety.
If you happen to discover more serious damage to your SUP board, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Take the board to a professional service centre to ensure that all issues are resolved correctly. This way, you can enjoy your SUP board for many more seasons with peace of mind.
