Skating Backwards on Rollerblades
How to Skate and Brake Backwards?
Skating backwards is one of the fundamental skills you need to master if you want to learn tricks. To move backwards, assume the reverse position of forward skating - toes pointing towards each other, heels outward.
While skating backwards, shift your body weight from one foot to the other, similar to forward skating. At the start of your training, it’s helpful to perform a few stationary exercises. Backward skating is challenging, and you’ll master it only through consistent practice. This rollerblading course will help you quickly grasp the basics of skating backwards.
First Steps in Skating
To skate backwards, mastering the correct body posture is essential. Your toes should point towards each other, while your heels are positioned outward. Shift your body weight from your left leg to your right. Begin by simply transferring your weight in this position on a safe, grassy area, then gradually start walking backwards.
Now, move to asphalt. Practise walking backwards with your toes turned inward. Perform four alternating movements and then set your feet parallel to maintain balance. Repeat this motion.
Proceed to the next exercise: shift your body weight onto the leg with the heel pointing in the direction of movement. Push off with the other leg, keeping your toes turned inward. Repeat the exercise with the other leg. Then, perform alternating movements, transferring your weight from one leg to the other, similar to forward skating. Once you gain speed, position both feet parallel to each other and continue skating backwards using the momentum.
Braking While Skating Backwards
When skating backwards, spread your skates wide apart, making a broad arc with both legs, and finally, point your heels towards each other. If done correctly, your path should resemble an “O” or an oval. Remember, do not let your heels touch at the end, as you might trip over them.
